Boston has taken a significant step towards green energy by partnering with itselectric, a Brooklyn-based electric vehicle (EV) curbside charging company. The collaboration aims to expand access to EV curbside charging across the city, showcasing a scalable model for public-private partnerships in sustainable infrastructure.
Key Highlights:
- Boston partners with itselectric to deploy curbside EV chargers.
- Hundreds of chargers to be installed over the next five years.
- Installations require no utility permitting or costs to property owners.
- itselectric offers the only UL-certified detachable cable EV charger.
- Partnership aims to ensure equitable access to EV charging across all neighborhoods.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized the importance of adapting to technological advancements and cleaner energy solutions. She expressed gratitude to the partners for increasing the number of charging stations, reinforcing Boston’s commitment to becoming the greenest city in the nation.
Supported by the Boston Transportation Department, itselectric plans to deploy hundreds of chargers in the next five years, with potential for further expansion. These Level 2 charging posts connect behind-the-meter to draw spare electrical supply from adjacent buildings, eliminating the need for utility permitting and reducing costs for property owners. Additionally, itselectric shares revenue from each charger with property owners, bringing both clean transportation infrastructure and economic benefits to the community.
Nathan King, CEO and co-founder of itselectric, praised Mayor Wu’s commitment to ensuring every household in Boston is within a five-minute walk of a public EV charging station. He highlighted that this partnership is about more than just infrastructure; it’s about enabling all Bostonians to participate in the transition to clean energy.
To help determine charger locations, Boston residents and property owners can sign up for itselectric’s charging stations on their website and participate in the city’s Suggest a Location survey. The city will continue engaging with residents at neighborhood events and selected sites, with sidewalk decals marking future EV charging station locations.
