Nissan unveiled two plug-in hybrid SUV concepts at Auto China 2026 on April 24, signaling an accelerated NEV product offensive in its largest growth market. The Urban SUV PHEV Concept and the Terrano PHEV Concept will both reach production within a year, alongside three additional new energy vehicles planned for China during the same period.

Two PHEV concepts target distinct buyers
The Urban SUV PHEV Concept targets younger Chinese customers with a daily-driver focus. Its design borrows from the NX8 and Nissan’s broader future SUV lineup, pairing electrification hardware with on-road performance tuned for city use.
The Terrano PHEV Concept revives a nameplate Nissan used outside North America from the mid-1980s through the early 2000s, where it served as the international counterpart to the Pathfinder. The new concept combines Nissan’s latest plug-in hybrid system with off-road-oriented design, aimed at buyers who split time between trails and commuting. Specific powertrain outputs, battery capacity, and electric-only range figures were not disclosed at the unveiling.
Production versions of both concepts are scheduled to be revealed within twelve months. Nissan also confirmed three additional NEV models for the Chinese market on the same timeline.
CEO frames China as innovation hub
Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa positioned China as both a sales market and a development base under the company’s “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life” vision.
“Under our vision, China is not only a highly competitive domestic market but also a source of innovation, enabling us to create new value and experiences for customers in China and in the global markets,” Espinosa said. “Advanced technology must serve a clear purpose and be experienced directly by customers through mobility that is safer, more intuitive, and more accessible. China is central to bringing this belief to life.”
The vision designates China as one of Nissan’s three lead markets alongside Japan and the United States, with a dual mandate as both a domestic growth engine and a global innovation and export hub.
Export strategy expands beyond China
Nissan’s NEV push in China since 2025 has produced the N7 electric sedan, the Frontier Pro PHEV pickup, the N6 plug-in hybrid sedan, and the NX8 electrified SUV. Several of these are now being routed to overseas markets.
The N7 is slated for export to Latin America and ASEAN countries. The Frontier Pro will reach Latin America, ASEAN, and the Middle East. The NX8 and the production version of the Terrano PHEV Concept are also planned for selected global markets, though Nissan has not named specific countries.
The company is targeting one million units in annual Chinese sales by fiscal year 2030, with exports identified as a strategic pillar of that volume goal.
