ChargePoint introduces the Omni Port, combining popular EV connectors into one, eliminating the need for adapters.
ChargePoint has unveiled the ChargePoint® Omni Port, an innovative solution designed to simplify the EV charging experience for both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers. Omni Port consolidates the most common connector types into a single charging port, eliminating the need for drivers to carry adapters and ensuring that any EV can charge in any parking space. This feature comes standard on select ChargePoint chargers at no extra cost.
Key Highlights:
- Omni Port combines the most prevalent EV connectors into one port for seamless charging.
- No additional cost for this feature on applicable ChargePoint chargers.
- Future-proof design supports current and upcoming EV models.
- Easy integration with the ChargePoint app for automatic connector selection.
- Compatible with 800-volt architecture for maximum charging speeds.
- Available on new chargers and as a retrofit option for existing models.
ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “With Omni Port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience.”
Omni Port stands out as the only publicly available solution addressing North America’s EV connector diversity across both AC and DC charging. This innovation guarantees that drivers of all vehicle makes can charge at the same station, enhancing the overall user experience. The new system is designed with future EV models in mind and is integrated into ChargePoint’s AC and DC charging stations.
Drivers using Omni Port need only to input their vehicle’s make and model into the ChargePoint app, which then automatically selects the appropriate connector type. For those who opt not to use the app, a manual selection can be made directly on the charger screen. This advancement simplifies the charging process by eliminating the need for adapters, ensuring a more convenient experience.
With over 5.5 million EVs on North American roads, many of which are equipped with J1772 or CCS1 charging ports, the need for a unified charging solution has never been greater. ChargePoint’s Omni Port meets this demand by providing a flexible, adaptable charging solution that works across multiple vehicle types without requiring dedicated parking spaces for specific connector types.
Omni Port is expected to begin shipping by the end of the year and will be available for retrofit on ChargePoint’s CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 models at a nominal cost. ChargePoint’s modular hardware design allows for quick and efficient upgrades, further solidifying its commitment to flexible and innovative solutions.
