Redwood Materials, a frontrunner in sustainable battery materials, has launched a new research and development (R&D) center in San Francisco, marking its initial foray into the Bay Area. This strategic expansion underscores the company’s commitment to advancing a circular battery supply chain, vital for powering a sustainable future. The facility aims to bolster innovation in battery technology, particularly in cathode production, as Redwood scales its operations to meet the rising demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy solutions.

The company has made significant strides recently. Redwood recycled over 20 GWh of lithium-ion batteries—equivalent to 250,000 EVs—and initiated construction on the United States’ first commercial cathode facility. It also opened the first U.S. lithium source and nickel “mine” in over a decade. These efforts align with Redwood’s goal to produce materials for 1 million EVs annually, reducing dependence on foreign supply chains.

Key Highlights:

  • New R&D Center: Redwood opens a 15,000-square-foot facility in San Francisco’s Design District.
  • Recycling Milestone: Processed 20 GWh of batteries, matching 250,000 EVs.
  • Domestic Production: Building the U.S.’s first commercial cathode facility.
  • Job Growth: Hiring for dozens of engineering roles in the Bay Area.
  • Recovery Rate: Achieves 95% recovery of critical battery metals.

Located in the vibrant Design District, the 15,000-square-foot R&D center features cutting-edge lab spaces. It will support Redwood’s engineering team in refining processes that recycle most U.S. lithium-ion batteries and recover 95% of key minerals, such as lithium and nickel. The facility enhances the company’s existing operations in Nevada and South Carolina, positioning San Francisco as a hub for technical innovation due to its rich talent pool.

Redwood is actively recruiting for numerous positions, primarily in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, boosting the local economy. This expansion reinforces its mission to electrify transportation sustainably.
