Ampere, Renault Group’s EV subsidiary, introduces an innovative battery strategy incorporating LFP technology and Cell-to-Pack solutions to reduce vehicle costs and enhance electric mobility in Europe.

Key Highlights:

  • Integration of LFP Technology: Complements existing NCM batteries, ensuring efficiency and price competitiveness.
  • Cell-to-Pack Technology Launch: A world premiere for pouch-type batteries, developed with LG Energy Solution.
  • Cost Reduction: Aiming for a 20% reduction in battery costs by early 2026.
  • European Value Chain: Collaboration with partners LG Energy Solution and CATL to establish a robust European supply chain.

Ampere, the European leader in intelligent electric vehicles (EVs), has announced a strategic battery plan incorporating Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology alongside the existing Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) batteries used by Renault Group. This move addresses market volatility and technological advancements effectively.

Ampere is collaborating closely with its suppliers LG Energy Solution and CATL to establish an integrated value chain in Europe, ensuring LFP technology’s competitiveness. These partnerships will supply LFP batteries for several Renault and Alpine models, meeting battery needs until 2030.

Ampere, in collaboration with LG Energy Solution, is also pioneering Cell-to-Pack technology, a global first for pouch-type batteries. This innovation increases vehicle range by incorporating more cells into a given space, thereby enhancing onboard energy capacity. Additionally, Cell-to-Pack technology contributes to reducing battery costs.

By integrating LFP and Cell-to-Pack technologies, Ampere aims to reduce battery costs by around 20% starting in early 2026. This initiative aligns with Ampere’s roadmap to lower costs and improve margins, showcasing the company’s ability to lead significant transformations swiftly.

Ampere is accelerating its operations in a rapidly evolving environment with four leading battery partners:

  • AESC: Located in Douai, France, focusing on NCM batteries.
  • CATL: Supplying LFP technology from their plant in Hungary.
  • LGES: Producing both NCM and LFP batteries in their plant in Poland.
  • Verkor: Specializing in NCM technology from its gigafactory in Dunkerque, France.

All batteries are assembled at Ampere’s ElectriCity facility in Douai, France.

Advancements in LFP technology over recent years and the development of a European value chain have made LFP a viable alternative to NCM. LFP technology, being less energy-intensive and more cost-effective, is ideal for small and midsize cars, contributing significantly to the affordability and democratization of electric vehicles in Europe. The first models equipped with LFP technology are expected by early 2026.

“In a fast-changing and competitive environment, our battery strategy is proof of the efficiency of Ampere’s open and horizontal approach with best-in-class partners, ensuring smart capital allocation, flexibility, and rapid execution. This plan aligns with Ampere’s roadmap to reduce costs by 40% before the next generation of vehicles,” said Josep Maria Recasens, Chief Operating Officer of Ampere.

“The work we’ve done with LG Energy Solution has enabled us to localize the entire value chain around LFP technology in Europe, significantly increasing its competitiveness, including with ‘Cell-to-Pack’. Innovation in batteries is ongoing, and we are working far upstream – in particular with our Innovation Battery Cell Laboratory to open in Lardy in 2025 – to engage our partners early on with us, on the major transformations to come,” said Philippe Brunet, SVP Powertrain and EV Engineering, Ampere.

Ampere, emerging from Renault Group, designs, develops, manufactures, and markets fully electric vehicles with advanced software technology. The company prioritizes customer experience, social and environmental impact throughout vehicle development, aligning with its commitment to customers and the planet.
