Rivian and EnergyHub have announced a partnership to expand utility EV managed charging programs for Rivian drivers across North America. The collaboration pairs Rivian’s direct-to-driver software ecosystem with EnergyHub’s grid-edge flexibility platform, aiming to turn electric vehicles into distributed grid resources.
Highlights
- Rivian vehicles will be eligible for both passive and active managed charging through utility EV programs powered by EnergyHub’s platform.
- EnergyHub’s technology enables dynamic load shaping, coordinating EV charging around distribution network capacity constraints.
- The partnership targets nationwide utility program expansion, making grid-aware managed charging more accessible for drivers and utilities alike.
- EnergyHub currently manages over 2.5 million distributed energy resources and more than 3.5 GW of flexible capacity for 170+ utilities.
How Managed Charging Works as a Grid Resource
As EV adoption grows, managed charging plays an increasingly important role in aligning charging behavior with local grid conditions. EnergyHub’s technology coordinates charging schedules to deliver the energy drivers need while staying within infrastructure limits. This grid-aware approach helps protect equipment from the power plant to the garage.
The managed charging capability is part of EnergyHub’s broader Virtual Power Plant platform. It integrates alongside connected thermostats, batteries, and other flexible devices to offer cross-device optimization.
What the Partnership Means for Drivers and Utilities
For Rivian owners, the partnership opens new opportunities to discover and enroll in utility EV programs. These programs can lower charging costs and simplify daily routines through smart charging features built into the Rivian ecosystem.
“Partnering with EnergyHub allows us to provide even more drivers with the opportunity to simplify their daily routine through intuitive smart charging features,” said Andrew Peterman, Director of Advanced Energy Solutions at Rivian.
For utilities, meanwhile, the collaboration makes it easier to recruit drivers and scale cost-effective managed charging programs. As a result, EVs can serve as flexible grid resources that support reliability and affordability.
Industry Context and Scale
Seth Frader-Thompson, President of EnergyHub, emphasized the mutual value of the approach. “Rivian’s software ecosystem and customer engagement make it easier for drivers to participate in utility programs, while grid-aware managed charging ensures EVs can serve as a resource to manage the load growth we are seeing across the country,” he said.
EnergyHub is a subsidiary of Alarm.com (NASDAQ: ALRM). Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) manufactures its vehicles in the United States and sells directly to consumer and commercial customers.
