Mayor Breed’s Curbside EV Charging Pilot Program is progressing with three proposals entering the next phase. This initiative aims to expand curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in San Francisco, targeting equitable access for residents without off-street parking. By collaborating with leading charging providers, the city advances its climate action goals and sustainable transportation strategies.

Key Highlights:

  • Collaborative Effort: The pilot program involves the SFMTA, Public Works, Public Utilities Commission, and the Environment Department to ensure alignment with San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan.
  • Innovative Charging Solutions: Urban EV, it’s electric, and Voltpost lead proposals focusing on urban integration, affordability, and scalability.
  • Data-Driven Implementation: Providers will gather usage data to inform future citywide EV charging policies.
  • Community Engagement: Stakeholders and residents will guide site selections and installation processes for equitable access.

The program adopts a phased approach to minimize financial risks for providers and expedite installations. Pilot sites, such as Duboce Triangle and the Dogpatch, will host initial chargers, with plans to expand to additional neighborhoods. The collaboration emphasizes innovation in integrating EV infrastructure into urban spaces with minimal disruption.

Urban EV focuses on user-friendly stations tailored for residential neighborhoods, enhancing accessibility for those without private parking. Brooklyn-based itselectric offers compact chargers powered by untapped electricity sources, reducing installation costs while providing property owners a revenue stream. Voltpost utilizes lamp post retrofits to deliver modular Level 2 chargers, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and rapid deployment.

Mayor Breed’s efforts extend beyond EV infrastructure, encompassing broader climate initiatives. These include CleanPowerSF’s renewable energy expansion, regulations mandating EV-ready commercial properties, and phasing out natural gas in new construction. Such measures have contributed to a 37% increase in new EV registrations in the city.

With a commitment to electrification and community engagement, the Curbside EV Charging Pilot Program sets a benchmark for sustainable urban development. To learn more, visit sfgov.org/ev-curbside.
