Scania Launches New Electric Coach Platform

Scania has introduced a new high-floor battery-electric platform, enabling its first zero-emission coaches with a range of up to 600 km for various urban and travel segment applications.

Scania has announced a significant advancement in transportation electrification with the unveiling of a new high-floor battery-electric bus and coach platform. This development allows the company to offer battery-electric vehicles for both the Urban and Travel segments.

Key Highlights

  • Introduction of a new high-floor battery-electric platform for buses and coaches.
  • Enables the launch of Scania’s first zero-emission coaches.
  • Provides a vehicle range of up to 600 km.
  • Designed for diverse applications, including inter-city, urban, and travel assignments.
  • Supported by a complete ecosystem of charging solutions and services.

Designed for Various Coach Assignments

The new platform is notably used for the company’s battery-electric coaches. It offers a range of up to 600 km and provides luggage space nearly equivalent to that of combustion-powered models. This capability is a critical factor for operators considering a transition to electric vehicles. The design makes the product well-suited for medium-distance inter-city routes, airport shuttles, and sports team transport.

Suitable in Both Rural and Urban Operations

Beyond long-distance coaching, the platform can be adapted for shorter inter-city operations, school buses, or sightseeing buses with different luggage capacity needs. The high-floor battery-electric platform is also engineered for urban use, offering a scalable path toward zero-emission bus rapid transit systems in cities across regions like Africa, Asia, and South America.

Flexibility in Platform and Charging Solutions

The platform is built with proven technology, including the e-machine, batteries, and charging interface, and is compatible with various body types. It features an adaptable e-machine output of up to 330 kW and an installed energy capacity of up to 534 kWh. The charging capacity is also flexible, reaching up to 325 kW.

This launch aligns with the rapid expansion of transport electrification beyond urban applications. In response to growing demand, Scania provides a comprehensive ecosystem of electrification services. This includes complete, customer-specified charging solutions like smart charging to help operators avoid peak energy costs and maintain battery health. The company also offers the Scania Charging Access service, which provides entry to a network of public charging stations for heavy commercial vehicles.

According to Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania, the new platform addresses operator concerns about combining zero-emission operations with the demands of urban and travel assignments.
