Stellantis has announced its commitment to the SAE J3400 charging connector for its battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in North America, starting with the 2026 model year. This move aligns with the industry’s shift towards standardized charging solutions and underscores Stellantis’s dedication to enhancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and customer convenience.

Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis SVP of global energy & charging, remarked, “Customers win when the industry aligns on open standards. We are happy to announce our backing and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, a milestone for all customers on the path to open and seamless charging.” He further highlighted the strategic alignment with Stellantis’s Dare Forward 2030 plan, aiming at open interoperability and advancing mobility for all.

Stellantis’s adoption of the SAE J3400 connector represents a significant step forward in the expansion of EV charging options. During the transition, adapters will be provided for vehicles equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port, facilitating access to the burgeoning J3400 infrastructure. This initiative complements the IONNA charging network joint venture, announced in June 2023, where Stellantis, alongside six other global automakers, plans to deploy over 30,000 high-powered charging points across North American urban and highway locales by 2030.

The IONNA network aims to offer an enhanced charging experience, powered by renewable energy and featuring high-powered charging capabilities, digital integration, strategic locations, and various amenities. This collaborative effort ensures that charging stations will cater to all BEV customers, supporting both CCS and J3400 connectors natively, with the first stations expected to be operational in 2024.

Stellantis’s strategic vision, Dare Forward 2030, targets carbon net-zero status by 2038, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility. As one of the leading automakers globally, Stellantis is known for its diverse and innovative vehicle brands such as Jeep®, Chrysler, Dodge//SRT, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat. This initiative further emphasizes Stellantis’s ambition to provide clean, safe, and affordable mobility solutions, contributing to the broader goal of environmental sustainability and enhanced customer service.
