Toyota has officially announced the 2026 Mirai, continuing its development of hydrogen fuel cell technology for the passenger vehicle market. The latest model year introduces updated standard features and aesthetic enhancements to the midsize sedan. It is scheduled to arrive at dealerships this winter.
Highlights
- MSRP starts at $51,795 excluding dealer processing and handling fees.
- The hydrogen powertrain delivers an EPA-estimated range of 402 miles.
- Purchase or lease includes up to $15,000 in complimentary hydrogen fuel.
- Standard equipment now includes 19-inch black machine-finished alloy wheels.

Powertrain and Performance
The 2026 Mirai utilizes a fuel cell electric powertrain that generates 182 horsepower. As a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the system generates electricity onboard by combining stored hydrogen with oxygen. This process results in water as the only tailpipe emission.
A rear-mounted AC synchronous motor drives the rear wheels. Electricity generated by the fuel cell and regenerative braking is stored in a lithium-ion battery. The high-capacity hydrogen tanks support an extended driving range, achieving an EPA-estimated rating of 402 miles.
Chassis and Engineering
Toyota builds the Mirai on the premium rear-wheel-drive GA-L platform. This architecture allows for the placement of two hydrogen tanks beneath the rear seats. The platform is paired with a multilink suspension system designed to provide handling agility and a quiet ride.
Engineers utilize laser screw welding and adhesive structure bonding to increase rigidity. Active Cornering Assist is standard, reducing understeer during cornering maneuvers. Hill Start Assist Control is also included to ensure smooth operation on inclines.

Interior and Technology
The cabin features a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The interface supports dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Over-the-Air (OTA) updates are available to keep the system current.
Standard interior amenities include:
- Seating: SofTex-trimmed heated front seats with 8-way power adjustment for the driver.
- Audio: JBL Premium Audio system.
- Charging: Qi-compatible wireless charging tray and multiple USB Type C ports.
- Climate: Dual-zone automatic climate control.

Safety Systems
The 2026 Mirai is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0). This suite integrates multiple active safety and driver-assistance technologies.
Key safety features include:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection: Detects vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists to provide warnings or automatic braking.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: Operates at a full-speed range to maintain preset vehicle-to-vehicle distances.
- Lane Tracing Assist: Assists steering to keep the vehicle centered in the lane while cruise control is active.
- Proactive Driving Assist: Provides gentle braking and steering inputs to support distance control and curve management.
- Traffic Jam Assist: Available for use in congested traffic conditions.
Ownership Benefits
Toyota provides an extensive benefits package for FCEV owners. This includes $15,000 of complimentary hydrogen fuel, valid for six years for purchasers or three years for lessees.
Warranty coverage includes:
- FCEV Components: Eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on key fuel cell parts.
- Hybrid Battery: Ten-year/150,000-mile warranty.
- ToyotaCare: Extended maintenance plan for three years or 35,000 miles.
