The Tri-gen facility at the Port of Long Beach has earned the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025 Better Project Award. This prestigious award recognizes the facility’s innovative efforts in energy efficiency and sustainability. It showcases how Tri-gen reduces environmental impact while supporting Toyota’s operations at the port.

Key Highlights

  • Award Recognition: Tri-gen wins the DOE’s 2025 Better Project Award for innovative energy solutions.
  • Partnership: A collaboration between FuelCell Energy and Toyota Motor North America.
  • Multi-Product Output: Produces renewable electricity, hydrogen, and usable water.
  • Environmental Impact: Cuts over 9,000 tons of CO2 and avoids more than six tons of NOx emissions yearly.
  • Hydrogen Production: Supplies up to 1,200 kilograms of hydrogen daily for fuel cell vehicles.
  • Water Recycling: Recycles about 1,400 gallons of water daily for industrial use.
  • Scalability: Acts as a model for clean energy systems worldwide.

The Tri-gen facility, commissioned by Toyota and managed by FuelCell Energy, is a unique system. It generates renewable electricity, hydrogen, and usable water to support Toyota’s vehicle processing at the port. Using directed biogas from a California wastewater treatment plant, it produces up to 2.3 megawatts of renewable electricity. Excess power returns to the local grid, boosting efficiency.

This process slashes emissions significantly, benefiting air quality at the busy Port of Long Beach. The facility also delivers 1,200 kilograms of hydrogen daily, fueling Toyota’s fuel cell vehicles like the 2025 Mirai and class 8 trucks. Additionally, it recycles 1,400 gallons of water daily for washing vehicles, cutting reliance on local water supplies.

Jason Few, CEO of FuelCell Energy, said, “Tri-gen delivers clean energy solutions without disrupting business operations.” Toyota’s Tom Stricker added, “It’s a model for integrating hydrogen into sustainable energy systems.” Launched in May 2024, Tri-gen proves clean energy can be practical and scalable, setting a standard for future projects.
