Volkswagen will introduce three innovative electric concept cars at Auto Shanghai, held from April 23 to May 2, 2025, spotlighting its “In China, for China” strategy. This initiative underscores the company’s dedication to tailoring new energy vehicles (NEVs) for the Chinese market, with plans to launch over 20 NEV models by 2027. These concept cars, developed with Chinese joint ventures, reflect Volkswagen’s focus on electric mobility, connectivity, and smart technology, aligning with local preferences and needs.

The showcased vehicles include an electric notchback model from FAW-Volkswagen, designed for sedan enthusiasts seeking modern electric performance; an electric SUV with range-extender technology from SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, addressing range concerns for extended travel; and an all-electric SUV from Volkswagen Anhui, highlighting a commitment to fully electric solutions. These near-production models, set to roll out from 2026, demonstrate Volkswagen’s agility, with development times shortened by more than 30 percent thanks to robust local collaboration.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, affirmed, “We have everything it takes to be successful in China.” This success hinges on leveraging strong partnerships with FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, and Volkswagen Anhui, alongside localized development, production, and infrastructure. Andreas Mindt, Head Designer, added, “We’ve adapted our European design values to honor our heritage while meeting the expectations of Chinese customers.”
Held biennially since 1985, Auto Shanghai is a global automotive stage, expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors. Volkswagen’s presence reinforces China’s critical role in its worldwide strategy, positioning the brand as a leader in the era of intelligent, connected vehicles through this ambitious electric push.
