BMW Joins Tesla’s Charging Network in North America

BMW of North America and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA have revealed their plan to offer drivers of BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce Combined Charging System (CCS) battery electric vehicles (BEV) access to specified Tesla Supercharger stations. The rollout of this feature is scheduled for early 2025.

Why It Matters

This initiative emphasizes the growing importance of ensuring that electric vehicle drivers have access to extensive and reliable charging networks. By collaborating with Tesla, a leader in electric vehicle infrastructure, BMW is further enhancing its commitment to electrification and ensuring its customers have a seamless charging experience.

Key Points

  • BMW will incorporate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its BEVs in the U.S. and Canada starting 2025.
  • A collaboration is underway to allow BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce drivers to easily locate available Superchargers via their vehicle’s display. Moreover, payments can be conveniently processed through their vehicle’s dedicated brand app.
  • Six all-electric models from BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce are currently available in the U.S., highlighting the company’s push towards electrification.
  • Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO of BMW North America, emphasized that expanding charging options remains a top priority for the brand.

Bottom Line

While this collaboration is a notable advancement, it’s separate from BMW NA’s recent announcement to co-develop a high-powered electric vehicle charging network in North America with six other automakers. This upcoming joint venture aims to set up over 30,000 chargers in urban locations and major highways. It will cater to any BEV drivers using the CCS or NACS charging standards. The establishment of this joint venture is anticipated within the year, contingent upon standard closing conditions and necessary regulatory approvals.
