Genesis Tunes GV60 Magma Powertrain and Driving Feel

Genesis has detailed the powertrain and driver-engagement engineering behind the GV60 Magma, its first high-performance model, which produces 641 horsepower (650 PS / 478 kW) and 583 lb-ft (790 Nm) from electric motors that spin beyond 20,000 rpm. The company reports the all-electric SUV reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.4 seconds, 124 mph (200 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and a top speed of 164 mph (264 km/h). Beyond the hardware, the GV60 Magma pairs a dedicated electric Active Sound Design system with the brand’s Virtual Gear Shift software to supply audible and tactile feedback an electric powertrain does not generate mechanically.

Motors and Acceleration

The GV60 Magma builds on the standard GV60 powertrain with upgraded motors and revised rotor speed tuning. Peak torque of 583 lb-ft (790 Nm) and peak power of 641 hp (650 PS / 478 kW) come from motors rated to spin past 20,000 rpm.

The 10.9-second run to 124 mph (200 km/h) is the figure that separates the Magma from the base car more clearly than the 3.4-second sprint to 62 mph, since sustained output at higher speeds is where battery-electric powertrains typically taper.

How Does e-ASD Change the Driving Experience?

The electric Active Sound Design system routes synthesized audio through the vehicle’s speakers, and drivers can select either an electric soundscape or a soundtrack modeled on a high-revving combustion engine. Genesis says the system works alongside the Virtual Gear Shift system so that the audio track matches what the chassis and powertrain are doing rather than running independently of them.

The company describes the combination as dedicated hardware paired with software written for the Magma rather than a calibration of existing GV60 components.

“Performance, in my eyes, always is the torque and power output of the propulsion system, the driveline,” explained Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Division. “One thing is acceleration capability, another is top speed. But, what is really important is the controllability, the preciseness, the confidence in the car. You need to be able to control this high performance level. And this is the philosophy, from an engineering standpoint: the essence is preciseness, the controllability of these powerful engines, of these powerful cars.”

Torque Vectoring and Drift Mode

Torque vectoring integrates the dual motors, a rear-mounted electronic limited-slip differential, electronic stability control and the braking system. By shifting torque between the front and rear motors, the system works to limit understeer and oversteer during cornering, sending as much as 65 percent of available torque to either axle. The rear e-LSD manages grip between inner and outer wheels as cornering loads shift, while brake-based vectoring responds to steering inputs during sharp cornering.

The e-LSD also enables a Drift Mode that runs drift-specific torque vectoring logic and its own acceleration map, inducing sustained oversteer so the driver can hold the car’s attitude through a slide.

Chassis and Structure

Suspension geometry was reworked to support the powertrain changes, with redesigned lower arms, hub carriers and link structures, a lowered roll center, and 275-section fifth-generation Pirelli P-Zero tires on forged 21-inch wheels that cut unsprung mass. Body structure was stiffened with additional structural adhesive, extra welding points and L-brackets in the wheel housings, raising torsional rigidity by 9.7 percent.

Genesis has not restated range, battery capacity or pricing in this release; US pricing for the GV60 Magma starts at $69,950, and the brand previously published full specifications for the 650 PS powertrain.
