Hyundai Unveils IONIQ V and 20-Model China EV Roadmap at Auto China 2026

Hyundai unveiled the IONIQ V at Auto China 2026 as its first dedicated China IONIQ model, alongside a plan for 20 new Beijing Hyundai models over five years.

Hyundai Motor Company used Auto China 2026 in Beijing to unveil the IONIQ V, the first dedicated production model for its IONIQ electric brand in China, and to outline a five-year plan that will bring 20 new models to the market through joint venture Beijing Hyundai. The debut formalizes what the company calls an “In China, For China, To Global” strategy, positioning the country as both a sales market and a development base for future global products. More information is available on Hyundai’s global website.

Highlights

  • IONIQ V is the first dedicated IONIQ production model engineered for Chinese customers, with a targeted range above 600 km on the CLTC cycle
  • Hyundai and BAIC Group have committed a combined 8 billion yuan (approximately $1.17 billion) to Beijing Hyundai under a December 2024 agreement
  • Beijing Hyundai plans 20 new models over five years, spanning battery electric and extended-range electric vehicles, with a 500,000-unit annual sales target
  • Technology partnerships include CATL for batteries, Momenta for ADAS, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 chipset for the in-vehicle AI assistant

A Dedicated China Product for the IONIQ Brand

IONIQ V is derived from the VENUS Concept and introduces a new Hyundai design direction called “The Origin” for the brand’s all-electric lineup in China. Exterior dimensions measure 4,900 mm (192.9 in) in length and 1,890 mm (74.4 in) in width, on a 2,900 mm (114.2 in) wheelbase, placing the vehicle in the midsize segment that dominates Chinese EV demand.

The long-range variant targets more than 600 km (373 miles) of range on the CLTC test cycle. CLTC figures typically run higher than WLTP and considerably higher than EPA-equivalent numbers, so the real-world range available outside China is not directly comparable to U.S. market EV ratings.

Hyundai highlighted frameless doors, floating side mirrors, and edge lighting as exterior design elements intended to reduce drag and distinguish the model from global IONIQ products. The IONIQ V slots in alongside other recent Hyundai launches in the brand, including the IONIQ 3 compact hatch unveiled for Europe earlier this month.

Interior and In-Vehicle Technology

The cabin centers on a 27-inch 4K panoramic display that consolidates driving and infotainment functions, paired with a Horizon head-up display. First-row legroom measures 1,078 mm (42.4 in) and second-row legroom 1,019 mm (40.1 in), with shoulder room of 1,502 mm (59.1 in) front and 1,473 mm (58.0 in) rear. An eight-speaker audio system supports Dolby Atmos.

The voice assistant runs on a large language model and uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset, the same automotive-grade silicon adopted by several Chinese EV brands for their latest cockpit systems. Advanced driver assistance is supplied by Momenta, a Beijing-based ADAS specialist whose software stack has been licensed across several international and domestic programs.

Safety Content

Hyundai lists a nine-airbag system, reinforced body structure, and multi-layer occupant protection as core safety content. The vehicle also includes Pedal Misapplication Safety Assist, which provides emergency braking support to mitigate unintended acceleration events — a feature that has drawn increased regulatory attention in several markets following high-profile incidents.

Investment, Sales Target, and Executive Commentary

The 8 billion yuan investment commitment, reached between Hyundai and BAIC Group in December 2024, underpins Beijing Hyundai’s transformation plan. The joint venture is targeting 500,000 units in annual vehicle sales, with exports expected to contribute alongside domestic demand. After IONIQ V, Beijing Hyundai plans an additional SUV in the first half of 2027 and a broader rollout across midsize to large segments covering both BEVs and EREVs.

Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz said of the strategy: “China is an essential market for Hyundai Motor Company. The world’s most demanding EV consumers, the fastest development cycles, the deepest battery supply chain, and an advanced innovation ecosystem. That is why we are tripling down on our commitment to China. With significant investments into Beijing Hyundai, 20 new models coming over the next five years, the official launch of our IONIQ brand in China and the unveiling of IONIQ V, this is the most committed, the most ambitious, and the most exciting chapter we have ever written in this market. China is where the future of mobility is being defined, and Hyundai intends to help define it, In China, For China, and ultimately, for the world.”

Beijing Hyundai Motor Company President Li Fenggang added: “Today, we are not just launching a new car; we are expressing our profound respect for the Chinese market and our unwavering commitment to its future. China is leading the global electrification charge, and its dynamic customers demand the best. IONIQ V and our new strategic vision demonstrate our resolve to meet and exceed those expectations, leveraging Chinese innovation to set new global standards in mobility.”

Strategic Context

Hyundai’s localization push follows a similar pattern to that of other legacy multinationals, with Volkswagen Group using the same “In China, for China” framing for its Beijing product rollout weeks earlier. The company is expanding partnerships in battery technology with CATL and ADAS with Momenta, and introducing a “One Price” policy across sales channels alongside dedicated IONIQ retail spaces.

Hyundai has not disclosed IONIQ V pricing, market launch timing, or detailed battery specifications. The company also declined to confirm whether the model or its underlying architecture will be exported to other markets.
