KAIYI X7 Hybrid Claims 746-Mile Combined Range

The KAIYI X7 Hybrid pairs a dedicated 1.5T engine with two electric motors for a maximum combined output of 355 hp (265 kW) and 391 lb-ft (530 N·m). Kaiyi Automobile detailed the powertrain behind the seven-seat SUV this week, roughly six months after launching the model globally in the first half of 2026. The company says its KAIYI Super Hybrid system gives the X7 Hybrid a combined range of up to 746 miles (1,200 km) across commuting and long-distance use.

How Does the KAIYI Super Hybrid System Switch Modes?

The system selects among five operating modes — EV, series hybrid, parallel hybrid, direct engine drive and regenerative braking — based on vehicle speed, power demand and battery charge. EV mode covers low-speed driving. When battery charge is low or the vehicle is traveling at low to moderate speeds, series mode holds the engine at an efficient operating point while the motor drives the wheels.

Under hard acceleration, overtaking or climbing, parallel mode combines engine and motor output. At steady highway speeds, direct engine drive cuts conversion losses, and regenerative braking recovers energy during deceleration.

Thermal Efficiency and Fuel Consumption

The dedicated 1.5T engine reaches a peak thermal efficiency of 44.5%, according to Kaiyi. In stop-and-go traffic, low-speed driving and acceleration, the electric motor absorbs part of the power demand, which the company says keeps the engine out of inefficient operating ranges.

Under NEDC conditions, fuel consumption with a depleted battery is roughly 45 mpg (5.2 L/100 km) — a figure the company ties to lower refueling frequency and running costs for family buyers.

Range and Everyday Use

Combined range reaches up to 746 miles (1,200 km), which the company positions for road trips, intercity travel and routes where charging access is limited. Electric-only range is up to 65 miles (105 km), covering commutes and school drop-offs before the engine is required.

Both figures are quoted on the NEDC cycle rather than the EPA cycle used for US window-sticker ratings, and the two are not directly comparable.

Kaiyi Auto frames the powertrain as a balance of fuel consumption, refueling convenience and travel range for family buyers. As the X7 Hybrid moves further into global markets, the company says it will continue developing electrified mobility around real-world use cases.
