Mercedes-AMG has added an entry-level model to its new GT 4-Door Coupé family, with the GT 53 producing up to 400 kW (544 hp) and a WLTP range of 503 to 424 miles (809–682 km). Sales open in Germany on August 13, 2026, priced from €115,430 (about $133,400) including VAT. The two-motor car expands the family of the recently unveiled GT 4-Door Coupé, and Mercedes-AMG frames it as the entry point to the series rather than a stripped-down variant.
Highlights
- Two synchronous motors deliver 400 kW (544 hp) peak and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), with 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds
- A 106 kWh usable 800-volt battery uses directly oil-cooled cylindrical cells with energy density above 298 Wh/kg
- DC fast charging peaks at 600 kW, adding more than 332 miles (534 km) in 10 minutes and 10–80 percent in 11 minutes
- German market launch is set for August 13, 2026, from €115,430 (about $133,400)
Two Motors and a Two-Speed Transmission
The GT 53 uses permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) on both axles, replacing the tri-motor layout of the electric GT 4-Door Coupé models launched earlier this year. Combined peak output is 400 kW (544 hp) with continuous output of 270 kW (367 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). Mercedes-AMG says the rear drive unit achieves 93 percent battery-to-wheel efficiency over long distances.
A two-speed transmission handles the spread between launch and cruising. First gear runs a short 11:1 ratio for acceleration from a standstill and urban efficiency, while second gear uses a 5:1 ratio for highway speeds, range, and comfort. Shift points adapt to the driving situation and the selected DYNAMIC SELECT program.
The front motor functions as a boost unit, engaged through a Disconnect Unit (DCU) when power demand or traction requires it and disengaged instantly under low load to cut drag. The company quotes 3.5 seconds from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) using one-foot rollout, or 3.9 seconds without it, and an electronically limited top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h) that rises to 155 mph (250 km/h) with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
What Makes the 800-Volt Battery Different?
The 106 kWh usable pack holds 2,660 cylindrical cells across 18 modules. The cells are tall and narrow — 105 mm high and 26 mm in diameter — a geometry Mercedes-AMG says shortens the path from cell core to surface for faster heat dissipation. Laser-welded aluminum cell housings replace steel, and a full-tab design reduces internal resistance.
Cell chemistry pairs an NCMA cathode with a silicon-containing anode, which the company rates at more than 298 Wh/kg. An electrically non-conductive oil flows directly around every individual cell. Thermal management runs through a Central Coolant Hub that integrates pumps, sensors, and valves into a single housing and can redirect cooling capacity toward the drive units when the battery does not need it.
How Fast Does the GT 53 Charge?
At 800-volt stations, DC charging peaks at 600 kW. Mercedes-AMG says 10 minutes recovers more than 332 miles (534 km) of WLTP range, equal to 70 kWh, with 41 kWh added in five minutes. A 10–80 percent state-of-charge session takes 11 minutes. The system switches automatically to 400-volt mode where 800-volt infrastructure is unavailable. Maximum AC charging power is 11 kW.
Active Aerodynamics and Adaptive Suspension
Two AEROKINETICS elements manage airflow at the rear. The standard active spoiler stays retracted up to 93 mph (150 km/h) to preserve the coupé profile, then steps through angle positions based on speed, longitudinal acceleration, and air-panel position, reaching its steepest setting for maximum downforce. The optional rear diffuser extends the vehicle contour to cut drag at highway speeds. Drag coefficient is 0.21.
AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension combines air springs with adaptive damping controlled through separate rebound and compression valves at each wheel, selectable across Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings. Drive goes through AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully decoupled motors. Curb weight is 5,236 pounds (2,375 kg).
A Simulated Inline-Six Soundtrack
In AMGFORCE Sport+, the GT 53 stages simulated gear changes with audible traction interruptions and a reproduced combustion soundtrack, with manual shifts available through the steering wheel paddles. The acoustic reference is the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine from the former Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé. Engineers captured it at 16 microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle and ran more than 100 measurements on the rolling road. Six DYNAMIC SELECT programs are offered: Comfort, Sport, AMGFORCE Sport+, Slippery, Eco, and Individual.
Pricing and Market Launch
German sales start August 13, 2026, at a recommended retail price from €115,430 (about $133,400) including 19 percent VAT. Combined energy consumption is listed at 18.5–15.6 kWh/100 km with zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions. Mercedes-AMG states that charging, consumption, and range figures are preliminary and not yet confirmed by an officially recognized testing organization. WLTP range figures are not directly comparable to EPA ratings, which are typically lower for the same vehicle.
“With the new GT 4-Door, we have truly made a statement. A highly dynamic vehicle that impresses in every single aspect. Now, we are expanding the family with a very attractive entry-level model at an equally attractive price. It combines the commanding power of the drivetrain with the emotional sharpness that distinguishes Mercedes-AMG: precise, intense, and fascinating,” said Dr Stefan Weckbach, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Business Units Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach.
