Voltpost, a company specializing in electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, has officially launched its first lamppost EV charging platform in Michigan. The initial deployment is located at the American Center for Mobility (ACM), a nationally recognized mobility testbed in Ypsilanti Township, near Detroit. This installation represents a significant step in a broader initiative to increase the availability of convenient and affordable EV charging infrastructure throughout the region.
Key Highlights
- First Deployment: The first Voltpost charger in Michigan is now operational at the American Center for Mobility (ACM).
- Expansion Plan: This is the first of 12 Voltpost chargers scheduled for installation across the greater Detroit area.
- Innovative Technology: Voltpost retrofits existing lampposts with modular, Level 2 EV chargers, significantly reducing the costs and time associated with traditional installations.
- Core Mission: The project aims to provide equitable and accessible curbside charging for residents, businesses, and visitors, particularly in urban settings.
- Strategic Collaboration: The deployment is supported by key partners, including the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) and NextEnergy.
A New Approach to EV Infrastructure
Voltpost’s innovative model addresses a critical challenge in the transition to electric mobility: the lack of accessible public charging. By retrofitting existing infrastructure, the company provides a scalable and cost-effective way to offer curbside and parking lot charging. This method circumvents the need for expensive and disruptive construction projects, accelerating the rollout of essential EV infrastructure.
The chargers are designed for rapid installation, capable of being fitted onto an existing lamppost in minutes. The platform is enhanced with Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity provided by AT&T, ensuring efficient operation and management. The first charger at the ACM campus will serve as a proving ground for the technology within Michigan’s robust mobility ecosystem.
Powering Michigan’s Electric Future
The initiative is a collaborative effort designed to solidify Michigan’s position as a leader in transportation innovation. Reuben Sarkar, president and CEO at ACM, noted that the collaboration enhances the region’s mobility ecosystem and promotes more sustainable urban transportation.
Support from the state is crucial. Through its Michigan Mobility Funding Platform, the OFME is focused on making charging accessible to everyone, including those in multifamily housing who may lack private charging options. Justine Johnson, Michigan’s chief mobility officer, emphasized the goal of creating meaningful, transformative change in mobility.
Future deployments are planned for strategic locations around Detroit, including Newlab at Michigan Central. NextEnergy, a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating clean energy solutions, is providing support to ensure these subsequent installations help close the gap in EV charging access across the community. The project’s official launch was celebrated with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 6, 2025.
