Valeo Service UK is preparing independent workshops for the 48V 2-Speed eAxle with Smart Dog-Clutch, a 90-pound (41 kg) electric rear axle now reaching the road on the Dacia Duster and Bigster. The unit replaces the mechanical rear driveline of a conventional four-wheel-drive system with an electrically driven rear axle running on a 48V architecture. Valeo Service UK says the technology gives distributors and repairers an early view of the hybrid hardware entering the UK vehicle fleet, and the aftermarket arm has committed to supplying OE-quality components, technical information, and training as those vehicles age into the independent channel.

Why Dacia Brings the Technology Into the Parc First

Dacia selected the eAxle for its Hybrid-G 150 powertrain, debuting on the Duster and Bigster with the Striker model to follow. Because those are high-volume, entry-segment SUVs, the technology enters the operational fleet in numbers rather than as a low-production halo application — the condition that determines whether independent workshops encounter a system regularly enough to invest in tooling and training for it.

Valeo positions the electric drive as an answer to tightening emissions requirements on conventional 4×4 hardware, with electric rear-wheel drive offsetting the fuel-consumption penalty that mechanical four-wheel-drive systems carry.

What Technicians Will Be Servicing

The two-speed architecture, co-developed with Renault Group, addresses the trade-off between low-speed torque and high-speed efficiency in electric drive systems. Rather than adding hardware to manage the shift, the Smart Dog-Clutch uses software-synchronized engagement — a design choice that keeps the unit compact and cost-effective enough for high-volume platforms, and one that shifts diagnostic weight toward software behavior rather than mechanical wear.

The 48V mild hybrid architecture underpinning the system is already familiar territory for workshops servicing recent European SUVs, though the two-speed rear axle is a new element within it.
